About Gymnastics VillageIn 1974, Judy and Chris Shenk moved to New Hampshire from Maryland where Judy had been working at a large family YMCA, teaching fitness, swimming and gymnastics to families, from babies to senior citizens. In 1974, New Hampshire and Amherst had a much smaller population and there were very few programs that offered athletic instruction. In the summer of 1975, Judy began a pre-school gymnastics program at Jiminy Cricket Nursery School in Amherst. As the program grew, the boys and girls outgrew the nursery school and their brothers and sisters were asking for lessons. In March of 1976, Gymnastics Village opened on Caldwell Drive where the Souhegan Workshop is now located, in 2400 square feet of space (we now have 13,500 square feet). We opened with approximately 80 children and Judy did everything - taught all classes, cleaned the facility, organized the office. In the summer, the first staff was hired when Neysa knocked on the window one Sunday afternoon and became our first coach. And then in the summer of 1976, Nadia scored her perfect 10's. After the Olympics, our enrollment soared as fathers dragged their little girls to the gym to become the next Nadia. And we have been growing ever since. When the original building was built in 1977, we had the
largest gym in New Hampshire and one of the largest and finest in New
England. Over the years the sport has changed dramatically. With the
innovations in equipment and rules changes, the sport has become much
safer and easier for athletes to learn and develop. Gymnastics Village
has invested many thousands of dollars in new and safe training equipment
as well as the expansion of the facility. Today we are proud to have
one of the best gymnastics training facilities in New England
